Two late 18th century Royal Navy swords, presented to William Henry Webley (later Webley-Parry, 1764–1837), First Lieutenant of HMS Zealous under Captain Samuel Hood, following the Battle of the Nile, 1st August 1798. Both swords in relic condition. Comprising: Blued and gilt Royal Navy officer’s sword, with wire-bound grip and gilt blade decorated with a crowned anchor motif. Brass guard with crown and fouled anchor design, loosely attached and missing its lion-head pommel. Together with remains of a leather scabbard retaining partial brass fittings. Blade length approx. 81cm. Royal Navy presentation sword, the hilt formed as a crocodile, cast in brass and curving to form both pommel and grip. Single-edged curved blade, approx. 76cm in length, etched with decorative motifs and a crown device, and marked “J. Runkel, Solingen” along the spine. Accompanied by two original brass identification tags, respectively inscribed: “SWORD. Presented by the Prize Agent to all 1st Lieut’s engaged in the Battle of the Nile, August 1st 1798.” and “SWORD. Presented by the Prize Agent to 1st Lieut. W. H. Webley after the Battle of the Nile, Aug 1st 1798, who presented similar swords to all 1st Lieut’s and Captains engaged in that action.” Provenance / Note: William Henry Webley (later Webley-Parry) served as First Lieutenant aboard HMS Zealous under Captain Samuel Hood during the Battle of the Nile, 1798 — one of Admiral Nelson’s most decisive victories. These swords were retained by Webley-Parry’s descendants and form part of the same family collection as his Swedish Order of the Sword (Lot 205). (2) (B.P. 21% + VAT)NO IN-HOUSE SHIPPING ON THIS LOT
